Student Chapter Spotlight: Texas Tech University

The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) here at Texas Tech is a national organization that helps connect, engage and further women in the communication field. We help women find internships and connect with our local professional chapter here in Lubbock, TX.

This past semester was sadly cut short due to the pandemic but our chapter was able to make the most out of the spring semester. The most difficult transition for our organization were elections, all of our seniors held a position on exec. We already started out with the problem of having to train a whole new exec team. Our elections were held virtually through texts and emails. We created posts on social media informing our members about our upcoming election and how you could apply for a position. We wanted to make the process as easy as possible due to the circumstances. Even though elections were virtual we had a large number of women apply. After careful consideration, we selected our new 2020-2021 executive team! Since elections, I have been in close contact with our previous President, Sarah Blackshear, who has done an amazing job communicating with me on what my duties consist of and helping make my transition into President be as easy as possible.

Our executive team has been planning for the upcoming school year and making sure our members feel safe and informed and can still get involved virtually.
For the upcoming school year, our team plans to utilize Zoom for virtual meetings. We are looking into live streaming our meetings through Zoom or other platforms like Instagram live to allow those who don’t feel comfortable having in person meetings or won’t be returning to Texas Tech. We have come up with the idea to allow members to register online for meetings beforehand so we can get an estimate of how many will be attending. We will be much more active on social media, we want to be as transparent as possible with our members and potential new members.
We can’t wait for this upcoming school year to grow our chapter and learn how to communicate and engage with our members through an online platform!
