Being Brave

I love the reaction I get when people ask me what I do for a living. When I say, “I’m the investigative correspondent for Inside Edition”, people’s eyes go wide and they usually say something like, “Wow! That sounds like a dangerous job!”

And it can be.
I like to say that armed with a microphone and lipgloss I chase badguys for a living. And in fact, what my investigative team and I do is expose corruption, scams and crime to an audience of 5 million people a night on America’s top rated syndicated news magazine. It’s an amazingly fulfilling career and one that has led to over two dozen national journalism awards including several CLARION awards, for which I am incredibly grateful.
It’s also a job that requires courage to confront predators, thieves, crooked politicians and people accused of everything from ripping off seniors to committing sexual assault and even murder.
So where does that bravery come from? Believe it or not, I believe that bravery is something that can be practiced & developed every day in your career, at school and in your personal life.
I travel around the country doing a keynote speech called #BeingBrave: Four Steps To Unleashing Your Inner Badass! Through journalism (first as a sportscaster, then as a breaking news reporter and now as an investigative journalist) I’ve developed a technique that helps me face down even the most intimidating subject and lets me conquer them on camera with courage.
I also teach my audiences a simple technique that can help you be more brave in every day situations… I challenge everyone from kids to CEOs to “Commit a Random Act of Bravery” every day. Do something you normally wouldn’t do. Something that takes you out of your comfort zone, but that forces you to stand up for yourself or someone else. Whether that means sitting next to a kid that nobody else will talk to at school to defending a co-worker who’s being marginalized in the workplace, we all encounter situations each day that require courage. If we force ourselves to meet that challenge head-on and conquer it, it will be easier to conquer the next challenge the following day, and so on.
Before you know it you will be living a life of heroism: You and those you care about will be safer, more productive and happier as a result.
We ALL have a superhero inside of us…It’s time to unleash her!
