Dear AWC Community:
For weeks – and yes, days – we have been in places that we have not been before – and my heart is breaking. We are a country in crisis and there are three major factors: the global pandemic, economic downturn/unemployment, and social injustice protests. None of us is immune to the issues that are pervading our lives. We may be sheltering at home or just grappling with a new normal life.
I have lost relatives to COVID-19 and know individuals who are protesting in our cities. You may be experiencing the same. We may wear masks and march, but the colliding crisis factors should compel us to summon our emotional intelligence and sensitivity for humanity.
It is times like these that our AWC Principles and Core Values should be prominently adhered to. They are honesty, respect for others, inclusivity, integrity, responsibility, trustworthiness, accountability and teamwork.
Because of the pandemic, some of our AWC members have lost client revenue, been furloughed, and may now be jobless. During my work life, I have experienced all of those. I am grateful to and applaud our national board of directors who have taken steps to provide assistance to those who comprise our nationwide membership team. Details are on the website landing page.
I would be very remiss if I did not applaud fellow communicators who are helping tell and document events and stories about the unfortunate history-making events. Utilizing traditional and non-traditional channels, they are bringing us information and intel with their professionalism, perseverance, and most of all, courage.
No matter your beliefs and views, please continue to be cognizant of the issues as we confront each mind bending crisis of our time. Some of our innocence has been lost but let us not shrink from our responsibilities as communicators. Let us not disregard humanity and vision that is so needed. We should revel in community togetherness and not wallow in anxiety. This is a time to envelope ourselves in hope.
We are universally at turning points and there can only be one path forward. Please be safe and informed – whatever you do and wherever you are.
