Recent violent events at our nation’s capitol have proven now more than ever, the need to know about free speech and the First Amendment. Even in our own state this past year, we’ve seen requests for transparency in government as it related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and education funding.
Joey Senat, Ph.D., teaches media law and multimedia journalism in OSU’s School of Media & Strategic Communications and conducts open government training statewide for county officials. Senat is the author of two
books, Our Right to Know in Oklahoma and Mass Communication Law in Oklahoma. He is a former president of Freedom of Information Oklahoma and served 15 years on its board of directors. He currently is on its advisory board. Founded in 1990, FOI Oklahoma is a statewide organization actively supporting those organizations and individuals working to open records or provide access to meetings illegally closed. Prior to becoming a college professor, he was a reporter for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn., and the Tulsa World.
